Golden sand, hidden coves and crystal-clear water - the best beaches within easy reach of Frigiliana, from Nerja's town beaches to the coves of Maro.
Frigiliana is a hill village, so you will not find a beach on the doorstep - but the coast is only 10 to 15 minutes away by car. Nerja's beaches range from busy town strands with full facilities to wild coves backed by cliffs in the Maro-Cerro Gordo natural park. The water here is some of the clearest on the Spanish Mediterranean, and the mountain backdrop makes every beach feel more dramatic than the typical Costa del Sol scene.

Playa Burriana
The biggest and most popular beach in Nerja, and the one we send most guests to. A long curve of golden sand with sun lounger rental, water sports (kayaks, paddleboards, jet skis), and a row of chiringuitos including the legendary Ayo's - famous for cooking enormous paellas over open wood fires on the beach. The water is calm and the sand slopes gently, making it excellent for families with children. Parking is available nearby, though it fills up in high season. About 6.5 km from La Molineta.
Playa Calahonda
Nerja's most photographed beach sits directly below the Balcon de Europa, reached by steps cut into the cliff. It is a small, intimate cove - atmospheric rather than spacious. The rock formations and clear water make it a lovely spot for snorkelling. Gets busy quickly due to its central location, but there is something special about swimming with the Balcon towering above you.
Playa de la Torrecilla
West of the Balcon de Europa, Torrecilla is a wide sandy beach with shallow, calm water - probably the best option for families with very young children. It has good facilities (showers, toilets, lounger rental, beach bars) and is easily accessible, with flat pedestrian access from the town centre. Awarded the Quality Q mark for its services and accessibility.
Playa el Salon
A small, sheltered beach just east of the Balcon de Europa, popular with locals. Less touristy than Burriana or Torrecilla, with a laid-back atmosphere and a couple of good restaurants right on the sand. A nice choice for a quieter afternoon.

Playa de Maro
Regularly voted one of the best beaches in Spain, Playa de Maro is a stunning cove at the foot of dramatic cliffs, surrounded by subtropical vegetation. The water is crystal-clear and the setting feels a world away from the developed coast. There is a small chiringuito for drinks and snacks. Access is via a steep path from the car park above. The beach is popular but never feels overcrowded because of its size and shape. About 9 km from La Molineta.
Tip: Arrive before 11am in summer to get a parking spot. Kayak hire is available on the beach and is the best way to explore the nearby sea caves and coves that are inaccessible on foot.
Cala del Canuelo
Further east along the coast (technically in Granada province), this beautiful cove is backed by steep pine-covered cliffs and feels wonderfully remote. The water is turquoise and the snorkelling is excellent. Access is via a marked path from the car park on the N-340. There are no facilities on the beach itself, so bring everything you need. About 12 km from La Molineta.
Playa Cantarriján
The last beach before the Granada border, Cantarriján is a naturist-friendly pebble cove in a beautiful setting. A shuttle bus runs from the car park in summer (the access road is closed to private cars). There is a basic chiringuito. The snorkelling here is among the best on this stretch of coast, with rocky reefs close to shore.
Calas del Pino
A series of tiny coves tucked below the N-340 between Nerja and La Herradura. Access is steep and scrambling is involved - these are beaches for the adventurous. The reward is near-total solitude and some of the clearest water in the area. Not suitable for children or anyone with mobility issues.
Practical tips
The beach season runs from roughly May to October, though the water stays swimmable into November. In July and August, arrive at popular beaches by 10am or go late afternoon - parking fills up fast. Most Nerja beaches have sun lounger and parasol rental for around 8 to 10 euros per day. The town beaches have lifeguards in summer; the natural park coves generally do not. For a truly special experience, rent a kayak from Burriana and paddle east along the cliffs toward Maro - you will pass sea caves, hidden coves, and possibly dolphins.
