Month-by-month weather, temperatures, and what to expect in every season - from summer heat to mild winters and the sweet spots of spring and autumn.
Frigiliana enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year and a Mediterranean climate that makes it a genuine year-round destination. But the seasons are distinct - summer is seriously hot, winter is mild but can be rainy, and the shoulder months of May, June, September, and October are the sweet spot for most visitors. Here is what to expect month by month, so you can plan accordingly and pack the right things.
January and February
Daytime temperatures of 14–17°C with nights dropping to 6–9°C. Some rainy days (around 50mm per month) but still plenty of sunshine between showers. The village is quiet, prices are at their lowest, and the light is beautiful for photography. February brings the first almond blossom in the hills above the village - a stunning sight. These are excellent months for hiking, as the mountains are green and the rivers have water. The pool is too cold but the countryside is at its most lush. Pack layers, a light jacket, and an umbrella. Evenings can feel genuinely cold.
March and April
Spring arrives properly. Daytime temperatures climb from 17°C in March to 21°C by late April, with nights around 10–13°C. Wildflowers carpet the hillsides and the days are getting noticeably longer. Rain decreases through the period. Semana Santa (Holy Week) often falls in April - this is a peak week with higher prices and more visitors, but the processions are worth seeing. By late April you can comfortably eat outside in the evenings. Pack light layers, a sun hat, and sunscreen - the sun is already strong.
Tip: If Easter falls in April, book early and expect higher prices. But the atmosphere in the village during Semana Santa is special and worth the premium.
May
The first of the golden months. Daytime highs of 22–24°C, nights around 14–16°C. Warm enough for the beach, cool enough for hiking and sightseeing. The pool season begins. Prices are still lower than peak summer, crowds are manageable, and the weather is reliably sunny without the oppressive heat of July and August. The Día de la Miel de Caña and Día de la Cruz both fall in early May, adding local colour. If we had to pick a single best month to visit, this would be it.
June
Daytime 26–28°C, nights 17–19°C. Hot but not yet unbearable. Long sunny days, warm sea (20–21°C and rising), and the Feria de San Antonio mid-month. The Noche de San Juan beach bonfires on the 23rd are a highlight. June offers genuine summer weather without the crushing heat and crowds of high season. Prices rise from mid-June as school holidays approach. Pack full summer kit - light loose clothing, high-factor sunscreen, a good sun hat, and swimwear.
July and August
Peak season. Daytime temperatures of 29–33°C, with nights still warm at 20–23°C. August is the hottest month and can feel oppressive between midday and 4pm, when temperatures in direct sun can exceed 40°C. Spanish families are on holiday and everywhere runs at maximum capacity - beaches are packed, restaurants are full, and booking anything last-minute is difficult. But the evenings are magical: warm, long, and vibrant. The Festival of Three Cultures in late August is the cultural highlight of the year.
Tip: In July and August, plan outdoor activities for early morning (before 11am) and evening (after 6pm). The siesta tradition exists for a reason - rest in the afternoon when the heat is at its worst. Drink at least two to three litres of water a day. Factor 50 sunscreen is essential, not optional.
September
The other golden month. Daytime 27–29°C, nights 19–21°C. Still genuinely hot but the intensity eases. The sea reaches its warmest (23–24°C) thanks to accumulated summer heat. Crowds thin rapidly after the first week as European schools go back. September offers summer weather at shoulder-season prices - arguably the best value month of the year. By late September evenings start to feel slightly cooler, but you can still eat outside comfortably every night.
October
Daytime 22–24°C, nights 14–16°C. Warm, pleasant days and cooler evenings. The pool is still usable in early October. Rain starts to return - occasional storms are possible but days are still mostly sunny. Excellent hiking weather now that the summer heat has broken. Low-season pricing kicks in. Pack layers and a light jacket, plus an umbrella just in case.
November and December
Autumn and early winter. Daytime temperatures of 15–20°C, nights dropping to 7–12°C. November and December are the wettest months, though rainfall is still much less than northern Europe (around 500mm annually in Frigiliana versus 600mm in London). Still plenty of sunny days between the showers. The village is quiet, prices are low, and you will have the hiking trails and restaurants largely to yourself. Christmas brings markets and festivities. Pack warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and an umbrella. Some evenings feel properly cold.
Pool and sea swimming
The pool season runs from May to October, with the water most comfortable from June to September. Unheated pools can feel cool in early May and late October. Sea swimming is best from June to October - water temperature rises from 20°C in June to 25°C in August and September, then drops through October (21–22°C, still swimmable for hardy swimmers). In winter the sea drops to 15–16°C, which is wetsuit territory.
