Kayaking past sea caves, paddleboarding to waterfalls, snorkelling clear coves and diving the Maro marine reserve - the best water days near Frigiliana.
The stretch of coast between Nerja and La Herradura is some of the most dramatic on the Spanish Mediterranean. The Maro-Cerro Gordo natural park drops sheer limestone cliffs into crystal-clear water, with hidden sea caves, a waterfall that cascades directly onto the beach, and a marine reserve teeming with life. Most of these sights are inaccessible by land - the best way to experience them is from the water.
Kayaking the Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs
This is the water activity we recommend most enthusiastically - it is unique to this area, spectacular, and accessible to almost anyone. Guided kayak tours depart from Burriana Beach in Nerja and paddle eastward along the cliffs of the natural park. Over roughly two hours you will pass towering sea cliffs with caves and natural arches, the Cueva del Lobo (Cave of the Wolf), freshwater springs emerging from the rock face, and hidden coves that cannot be reached on foot. The highlight is the Cascada de Maro - a 40-metre waterfall dropping from the cliffs into the sea. Most tours include a snorkelling stop at a sheltered cove along the way.
Tip: Book the morning slot - the water is calmer and the light is better for photos. Tours cost around €38 per person and include kayak, life jacket, guide, and usually free photos. No experience is needed. Book ahead in July and August - they sell out. Minimum age is typically 6–8 depending on the operator.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
SUP tours follow a similar route to the kayak tours, paddling from Burriana along the Maro cliffs. The advantage of a paddleboard is the lower clearance - you can glide into cliff caves that are too tight for a kayak. You will paddle to the Maro waterfall, explore sea caves, and stop for snorkelling with equipment provided. It is more physically demanding than kayaking - you need reasonable balance and core strength. Guided tours run around €40–50 per person for two to two-and-a-half hours.
Tip: If you have never tried SUP before, a calm day on Burriana Beach is a good place to learn before tackling the cliffs. Complete beginners may prefer kayaking for the open-water sections.
Snorkelling
The Maro-Cerro Gordo marine reserve has some of the clearest water on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. You do not need a guided tour - bring a mask and snorkel (or rent from the operators on Burriana Beach) and explore the rocky edges at Playa de Maro, Cantarriján, or around the headlands at either end of Burriana. Expect to see colourful wrasse, bream, damselfish, octopus, sea urchins, and anemones. Occasionally you may spot moray eels, rays, or small barracuda. The best snorkelling is at the hidden coves along the cliff coast, accessed by kayak or paddleboard.
Scuba Diving
Nerja Dive Resort is a PADI 5-star centre on Burriana Beach that has been operating for over 20 years. They offer Discover Scuba sessions for complete beginners - around €85 for a one-hour dive with all equipment, transport, and post-dive refreshments (three hours total, minimum age 10). Certified divers can join boat dives along the Maro-Cerro Gordo coast at multiple dive sites. They also run the full PADI certification pathway from Open Water through to Divemaster, including junior courses from age 10. Visibility ranges from 10 to 25 metres depending on conditions, and water temperature from 15°C in winter to 24°C in summer. Best diving is June to October.
Boat Trips
For those who prefer to stay dry - or mostly dry - small-group boat tours cruise along the Nerja-Maro coastline with swimming stops, cliff views, and drinks included. Tours start from around €30 per person for one to two hours. Private charters are also available from around €400 for four hours, including captain, drinks, food, and snorkelling equipment for up to four to six passengers. Some operators offer combined boat-and-paddleboard trips that take you to a remote cove by boat and let you explore by SUP.
Tip: Boat trips are the best option for families with young children (under 6) who cannot join kayak tours. Book via the operators on Burriana Beach, or through GetYourGuide and Viator for reviews and guaranteed availability.
When to go
The water activity season runs from May to October, with the best conditions from June to September. Morning tours generally have calmer water. All boat, kayak, and paddleboard activities are weather-dependent - tours may be cancelled after strong winds or storms. If you are booking activities around your arrival day, have a flexible backup plan. Water temperature reaches a comfortable 22–24°C in July and August, and remains swimmable well into October.
