Frigiliana sits 6 kilometres north of Nerja on the eastern Costa del Sol, about 71 kilometres from Málaga airport. The drive takes roughly an hour on good roads. A rental car is the strong recommendation - it gives you freedom to explore the white villages, hidden beaches, and mountain trails that make this area special. But there are alternatives if you prefer not to drive.
Option 1: Rental car (recommended)
The drive from Málaga airport is straightforward. Take the A-7 coastal motorway east, exit for Nerja, and follow signs to Frigiliana on the MA-5105, which climbs gently for 6 kilometres through avocado groves. All the major car hire companies operate from the airport (Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Enterprise) alongside Spanish firms like Goldcar and Record Go. Expect to pay €25–50 per day for a small car in summer - book well in advance for July and August when prices double and availability drops. A small car (Seat Ibiza or VW Polo size) is ideal; anything larger is impractical on mountain village roads. Always take full insurance or an excess waiver - Spanish rental companies are notorious for damage claims, and the cost of a scratch or dent without cover can easily exceed the rental itself. Option 2: Private transfer
A pre-booked car with driver meets you at arrivals and delivers you door to door in 55–60 minutes. Prices start at around €98 for a saloon (up to 4 passengers), €125 for a minivan (up to 7), and €191 for a minibus (up to 19). Operators include Málaga Transfer, Solhop, Sun Transfers, and Holiday Taxis. The advantages are no navigation stress after a flight, door-to-door service, and child seats available on request. Option 3: Public transport
The cheapest but most complicated option. Take the Cercanías train (line C1, about 12 minutes, €1.80) from the airport to Málaga city centre. From Málaga bus station, ALSA buses run to Nerja several times daily - the journey takes about 90 minutes and costs €5–8. From Nerja, a local bus runs to Frigiliana every hour or so (20 minutes, €1.30). Total journey time is 2–3 hours with connections. It works but is not ideal with luggage or small children. If you take the bus to Nerja, a taxi from Nerja to Frigiliana costs €12–15 and saves the wait for the local bus.
Driving in the area
The A-7 coastal motorway is well-maintained dual carriageway for most of the route between Málaga and Nerja - easy, relaxed driving. The MA-5105 from Nerja up to Frigiliana is a good road with some bends, climbing steadily for 6 kilometres. Mountain roads to the white villages (Cómpeta, Canillas de Albaida, Árchez) are narrower - single-track in places with tight hairpin bends and steep climbs. The surfaces are well-maintained but the roads demand concentration. If you are not confident on narrow mountain roads, stick to the main routes and take taxis or tours to the mountain villages instead.
Parking
Frigiliana has free car parks on the approach road, well signposted as you drive up from Nerja. Use them. Do not drive into the old town - the streets are far too narrow and you will get stuck. The car parks are a five-minute walk from the Moorish quarter. In Nerja, there are underground car parks in the town centre (paid, €1–2 per hour) and street parking with blue zones (paid) and white zones (free). If you are heading to Burriana Beach in summer, arrive before 11am for a parking space.
Tip: There is no petrol station in Frigiliana - fill up in Nerja. Repsol and Cepsa stations are on the main road.
Getting around without a car
The Nerja–Frigiliana bus (operated by ALSA) runs several times daily, roughly hourly during the daytime with a reduced schedule on Sundays. The journey takes 15–20 minutes and costs €1.30. This is adequate for trips to Nerja for shopping, restaurants, and beaches, but not practical for day trips to the mountain villages or further afield. Taxis are available from the rank near the Balcón de Europa in Nerja - Frigiliana to Nerja costs €12–15. Uber and Bolt do not operate in this area. Electric bikes can be rented in Nerja; the ride down to Nerja is easy but the climb back up to Frigiliana is challenging without electric assist.
