A self-guided wander through the Barribarto, Frigiliana's Moorish quarter - whitewashed lanes, the 1569 rebellion ceramic panels and the best viewpoints.
Regularly voted one of the prettiest villages in Andalucía, Frigiliana wears its history openly. The upper part of the village - the Barribarto - is the best-preserved Morisco (Moorish) quarter in the province, a tangle of steep, whitewashed lanes barely wide enough for a laden mule, brightened with pots of geraniums and glazed-tile street names. This short self-guided walk takes in the highlights; allow an unhurried hour or two, and go late afternoon when the light turns the walls gold and the day-trippers have thinned.
Into the Barribarto
Start in the lower village around Plaza de las Tres Culturas and climb into the old town on Calle Real. Almost at once the streets narrow, steepen and start to twist - this is the Barribarto, laid out by the Moors more than a thousand years ago and barely changed since. Doorways are framed with hand-painted tiles, staircases vanish between houses, and every turn frames a new view of whitewash against blue sky. There is no single route; getting mildly lost is the point.
Tip: Wear proper shoes with grip. The cobbles (called 'empedrado') are handsome but polished and steep, and slippery in the rare wet spell.
The ceramic panels - a village that tells its own story
Set into walls throughout the old town are twelve decorative ceramic panels, the 'Ruta del Apero', which together narrate the dramatic history of the Morisco rebellion of 1569. Each panel, with a verse beneath, marks a stage in the uprising and its tragic end at the nearby fortress. Following them is a lovely way to structure a wander and to understand the place you are walking through - pick up the free leaflet from the tourist office on Calle Cuesta del Apero to find them all.
El Fuerte and the Peñón de Frigiliana
Rising above the village is El Fuerte, the rocky hill where, in 1569, the last Moriscos of the Axarquía made their final stand against the Spanish crown. A steep marked path climbs to the summit ruins in around 45 minutes and rewards you with sweeping views over the village rooftops to the sea - a moving spot, and the best panorama in Frigiliana. It is exposed, so take water and a hat, and avoid the midday heat in summer.
El Ingenio - the last cane-honey mill in Europe
Dominating the lower old town is El Ingenio, a 16th-century palace that today houses the Nuestra Señora del Carmen factory - the last working mill in Europe still producing 'miel de caña', the dark sugar-cane molasses that has been made here for centuries. You cannot usually tour the factory, but the building is magnificent, and jars of the honey make an authentic local gift; drizzled over goat's cheese or aubergines, it is a taste of the village you can take home.
Shops, viewpoints and where to pause
The old town is dotted with artisan workshops selling ceramics, textiles, local wine and, of course, cane honey, alongside small bars where you can stop for a caña and a plate of tapas. Seek out the miradors - the little viewpoints tucked at the ends of alleys - for photographs across the terracotta rooftops. Calle Zacatín and the Plaza de la Iglesia, by the 17th-century church of San Antonio de Padua, are the classic postcard spots.

The upper old town is pedestrian-only, so park in the lower village (there is a pay car park on the edge of town) and walk up. It is genuinely steep in places, which makes it unsuitable for wheelchairs and hard work with a buggy - a baby carrier is easier with small children. Mornings and late afternoons are quietest and coolest; midday in high summer is best spent in the shade.
