The Costa Tropical lives up to its name — subtropical climate, mango and avocado plantations, and a coastline of sheltered coves between dramatic cliffs. The Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo natural park stretches 12 km along the coast, with cliffs up to 250 m high plunging into the sea. Protected since 1989, the underwater life here is exceptional.
Beaches
Playa de Cantarriján
Tucked inside the Maro-Cerro Gordo natural park, this grey-pebble cove sits between dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear water. It’s clothing-optional — the beach nearest the restaurants is a relaxed textile-naturist mix. A free shuttle bus runs down the steep access road in summer; the rest of the year you can drive. Fishing is banned in the reserve, so the snorkelling is outstanding.
Playa de Maro
The most accessible cove in the natural park, reached by a short path from the village of Maro. A small, beautiful beach with turquoise water framed by cliffs — arrive early in summer as it fills up. Other tiny beaches along the park require scrambles down from the clifftop or a boat to reach.
Where to Eat
Bola Marina — Cantarriján
A chiringuito right on the Cantarriján sand, serving fresh fish, paella, grilled meats and seafood with outdoor tables overlooking the water. The combination of protected-cove setting and good Mediterranean cooking makes it one of the coast’s best beach-restaurant experiences. Have a long lunch, swim, then head back up the hill.
On the Water & Beyond
Kayaking the Cliffs
Guided kayak tours (about 2.5 hours) launch from Burriana Beach and paddle beneath the cliffs to the Maro waterfall, which drops straight into the sea. Along the way you pass the Sea Wolf Cave, a cliff-face “vertical garden,” and posidonia meadows. Suitable for beginners and families from age 4.
Río de la Miel Valley
A roughly 11 km mountain road climbs from near the coast into the valley behind Nerja, gaining around 940 m of elevation. Popular with road cyclists and used for an annual hill-climb race in September. The wild, shaded scenery is spectacular — just be prepared for a serious gradient.
The coast is just minutes away
Mountain peace in the morning, beach life by lunchtime. That’s the beauty of La Molineta.
