Frigiliana with Kids - A Family Guide to the Costa del Sol

Frigiliana and neighbouring Nerja make an easy, rewarding base for a family holiday. Distances are short, the beaches are calm and shallow, and there is enough variety - sand, caves, river, mountains and a water park - to keep children of every age happy without long drives. This guide gathers our favourite family days out, roughly in order of how often we send guests to each, with practical notes on ages, timing and what to bring.

Beach days for little ones

The gently shelving town beaches are ideal for families. Playa de la Torrecilla in Nerja has shallow, calm water, showers, toilets, lounger hire and beach bars within a few steps - the easiest option with toddlers and buggies. Playa de Burriana is bigger and busier, with kayak and pedalo hire, a playground, and the famous Ayo's paella cooked over open fires. Both slope gently, so there is plenty of shallow water for paddling. Arrive before 11am in July and August to claim shade and parking.

The Nerja Caves - perfect for a hot or rainy day

Ten minutes from Frigiliana, the Cuevas de Nerja are a genuine wow moment for children - vast cathedral-sized chambers full of stalactites and stalagmites, kept at a constant, cool 19°C whatever the weather outside. The walkways are well lit and easy, though there are steps, so a baby carrier works better than a buggy. Right next door, a short shaded walk leads to the Acueducto del Águila, a striking four-tier aqueduct that older children enjoy spotting. Buy timed tickets online in advance to skip the high-season queue.

Aquavelis water park and rainy-day standbys

For a full day of splashing, Aquavelis water park in Torre del Mar (about 35 minutes west) has slides for all ages plus a shallow children's zone, and runs from roughly mid-June to early September. Closer to home, Nerja has mini-golf, and the seafront promenade at the Balcón de Europa is made for ice creams, street performers and a gentle wander. These are the easy wins when everyone needs a change of pace.

Gentle nature and the Río Chillar river walk

Older children love the Río Chillar walk near Nerja - you wade upstream through ankle- to knee-deep water between narrow limestone gorges, an adventure that feels wild but is mostly flat. Wear old trainers or sturdy water shoes (the riverbed is stony) and start early to find parking. For younger legs, the paved cliff-top path east of Nerja through the Maro-Cerro Gordo park gives sea views and coves without any real climbing.

Exploring Frigiliana village with children

The old town itself is a joy for families: no traffic in the upper streets, cats to spot on every corner, hidden staircases to explore, and artisan shops selling honey, ceramics and sweets. It is steep and cobbled, so a baby carrier beats a buggy, but the distances are short and there is always a plaza with a bench and an ice cream nearby. Late afternoon, once the heat eases, is the loveliest time to wander.

Practical tips for families

All four of our villas have private pools - always supervise children closely, as none are fenced. Cots and high chairs can be arranged on request, so let us know your children's ages when you book. Mercadona and Aldi in Nerja stock everything from nappies to baby food, and there are well-stocked pharmacies in both Nerja and Frigiliana for the inevitable scraped knee. Spanish restaurants are relaxed and welcoming to children, and eating out later, the local way, suits family holidays surprisingly well.
